Spring 2027 · Nominations close December 4

The Caveat First Course Award

Three Arizona high school students will take their first real college course this spring, fully supported, at no cost for the support. They are nominated by the adults who know them best: a counselor, a teacher, a coach, a co-op leader or a program director.

What the award covers

ASU's own fees are paid to ASU, not to Caveat: $25 to start the course, and $400 only if the family later chooses to add the grade to an official ASU transcript. Arizona students who took the ACT may pay $350 instead. Caveat helps every awarded family with the timing and the paperwork.

Who can be nominated

Any Arizona student in grades 9 through 12, in a public, charter, private or homeschool program, who is curious and would benefit from a first college course with support. A high GPA is not the point. We are looking for students who would make good use of a weekly advisor: the quietly capable, the bored, the one who would never sign up alone.

Students cannot nominate themselves, and parents cannot nominate their own children. The nominator should have told the family and have the parent's permission for Caveat to contact them.

How it works

  1. Nominate by December 4. The form below takes about three minutes. Two or three sentences about the student is plenty.
  2. Every nominated family gets a free planning call. Award or not, each family receives a 20-minute call with a Caveat advisor and a written suggestion for a first course.
  3. Awards are decided by December 11. We consider readiness, how much an advisor would help, and the family's circumstances. Each nominator hears the outcome first.
  4. The course starts January 12 or March 16. The student does all of the work; Caveat provides the plan, the weekly check-in and the Friday report.

Questions

Can I nominate more than one student? Yes, up to three. Send one form per student.

Will winners be announced publicly? Only the number of awards. Students are never named publicly without the family's written permission.

What if the student is not ready this spring? The planning call will say so honestly, with what to practice first. The award can begin in the March 16 session.
