Caveat Lens · Grades 1 to 8

Sounds and Speed
Screener.

Listening games with sounds, repeating numbers and made-up words, and naming rows of letters and numbers as fast as possible while you time it. You read every item from a script. About 15 minutes.

What it checks

  • Hearing and changing sounds: putting sounds together into words, breaking words into sounds, and taking a sound away.
  • Memory for sounds: repeating sets of numbers and made-up words.
  • Naming speed: naming 40 letters and 40 numbers as fast as possible (grades 1 and 2 also name colors and pictures).

How it is scored

Each item is scored right or not right. Hearing and changing sounds and repeating made-up words are scored as a percent correct; repeating numbers is the longest set repeated in order; naming speed is the time for 40 items. All bands are Caveat's own screening thresholds by grade band.

Caveat Lens screeners are screening, not diagnosis. They do not diagnose dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, a language disorder, ADHD or any other condition, and they do not replace an evaluation by a licensed psychologist, a neuropsychologist or a school evaluation team. There are no norms behind them; the bands are Caveat's own screening thresholds. If you are worried about your child, ask for an evaluation anyway.
