The question types, practiced

State tests share a small set of question types. Every set practices all of them, with feedback on each answer.

  • Multiple choiceOne correct answer among four.
  • Choose twoMultiple select: exactly two answers, each fully correct.
  • Two-part questionsPart A asks about the text or the problem; Part B asks for the evidence or reasoning behind Part A.
  • Equation and number entryType a number or decimal, the way computer-based math tests ask for it.
  • OrderingPut events, steps or numbers in order, the course engine's version of drag and drop.
  • Short constructed responseA few sentences or the work for a problem, checked against a scoring guide, with a model answer.
  • Text-dependent writingIn ELA: an essay built on two passages, with an original 4-point rubric and a model response.

The 12 sets

Five modules each: test-day strategies, then four modules of the grade's skills, each with lessons, a practice set, a scored short response and a module exam, then a final and a certificate.

Find your state's own practice tests

Every state that gives end-of-year tests in grades 3 to 8 posts information for families on its department of education website, and most post free practice tests that use the real testing screen and tools. Trying one is the best way to learn the screen before test day.

  1. Search for your state's name with the words department of education state assessment practice test.
  2. On the state's assessment pages, look for practice test, training test, sample items or released items, by grade and subject.
  3. Some states also post scoring guides or rubrics for written responses. Compare them with the rubrics in these sets.
  4. Ask your child's teacher or the school's testing coordinator which practice test matches this year's test, and whether accommodations can be turned on in it.

We do not link to any one state, because test names, platforms and practice sites change from year to year.

Students with testing accommodations

Accommodations in an IEP or a 504 plan, such as extended time, breaks, text-to-speech or a scribe, apply to state tests. The pacing clock in these sets can be hidden, and it never ends an exam. Practice with the same supports the student will use on test day.

The free Testing Accommodations Guide explains how accommodations on state tests work, in general terms, with a checklist and a letter to the testing coordinator. The free Score Report Explainer helps read the report that comes back.

Every passage, problem and rubric in State Test Practice is original practice written by Caveat Academic Services. The sets do not use released test items and are not made by, endorsed by or aligned to any particular state's test; test names belong to their owners. Skills are listed with Common Core State Standards numbers for reference only; © Copyright 2010 National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers. Many states use these standards or close versions with their own numbering. Practice scores show what a student can do on these items; they do not predict a state test score or performance level. Progress saves only in the browser on the student's device.

State Test Practice is original practice, not a state test and not affiliated with any state. Caveat Academic Services is an independent college preparation company. Students do all of their own work.
