Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia and more: which professionals evaluate and diagnose, where to start, what the school does for free, and what to bring.
Caveat does not diagnose. This guide helps you find the right licensed professional, use the free school route at the same time, and bring the right information. Autism is a Caveat specialty: we help families before, during and after an evaluation.
What are you wondering about?
Two routes, at the same time
The school route is free. Public schools must evaluate students they suspect may have a disability that affects learning, at no cost to families. Ask in writing; this also applies to many private and homeschool students through the local district. Our free letter tool writes the request.
The medical route gives a diagnosis. Doctors and licensed psychologists diagnose conditions like autism and ADHD. Insurance often covers part of it; ask your plan which providers are in network and whether a referral is needed.
A school evaluation decides eligibility for school services; a medical diagnosis is different. You can pursue both, and one can help the other.
General information, not medical or legal advice. Rules, timelines and who may diagnose vary by state and insurance plan. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.
Want help with this part? Your Caveat advisor researches the right professionals for your family, prepares the paperwork, and turns the results into a school plan.
This tool is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Each college decides admission, aid and how credit counts, and requirements change; check each college's own pages. Examples are examples, not promises. Caveat Academic Services is an independent college preparation company. Students do all of their own work.
