Caveat Lens · Grades 1 to 8

Oral Reading
Screener.

Your child reads two short passages out loud while you mark any misread words and the page keeps time. Then your child reads and answers questions about each passage. About 10 to 15 minutes.

What it checks

  • Reading rate: words read correctly in one minute.
  • Accuracy: the share of words read correctly.
  • Understanding: four questions about each passage, read by your child.

How it is scored

You tap any word your child misreads, skips or needs help with. At one minute the page asks you to tap the word your child is reading. Reading rate is compared with published oral reading fluency benchmarks for the grade and time of year; accuracy and understanding use Caveat's own screening thresholds.

What you need

  • A quiet room and the device this page is on (a phone works; a tablet or laptop is easier).
  • About 10 to 15 minutes. Nothing to install, and no audio is recorded.
  • Optional: the printed student pages, if your child would rather read from paper.

One of the grades 1 and 2 passages begins: "Nell had a red kite with a long tail. On a windy day, she ran up the hill behind her house."

Caveat Lens screeners are screening, not diagnosis. They do not diagnose dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, a language disorder, ADHD or any other condition, and they do not replace an evaluation by a licensed psychologist, a neuropsychologist or a school evaluation team. There are no norms behind them; the bands are Caveat's own screening thresholds. If you are worried about your child, ask for an evaluation anyway.
