Caveat Lens · Grades 1 to 8

Word Reading and
Spelling Screener.

Your child reads real words and made-up words, one at a time in large print, and then spells words you read aloud. Each word is tagged as following common spelling patterns or as irregular. About 10 to 15 minutes.

What it checks

  • Real words: words that follow common spelling patterns and irregular words, often called sight words.
  • Made-up words: sounding out words your child cannot have memorized.
  • Spelling: ten words read aloud, with a note on whether a misspelling kept every sound.

How it is scored

You score each word as read right away, read correctly but slowly, or not correct. Reading and spelling are scored as a percent correct for the grade band. The report also shows regular words against irregular words and how many words were read right away. Bands are Caveat's own screening thresholds.

Caveat Lens screeners are screening, not diagnosis. They do not diagnose dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, a language disorder, ADHD or any other condition, and they do not replace an evaluation by a licensed psychologist, a neuropsychologist or a school evaluation team. There are no norms behind them; the bands are Caveat's own screening thresholds. If you are worried about your child, ask for an evaluation anyway.
