Before you decide

Check the hours.Count school, practice, work and sleep and see whether a course really fits this week. Will a course fit this week?
Pick the course.Match interests, target colleges and hours to a short list. Find the right first course.
Look the course up on the Credit Map.See how the University of Arizona and NAU count it, from their published guides. The Arizona Credit Map.
Talk to the school counselor.Ask whether the course counts for high school credit and, for athletes, how it is reported. A one-page sheet to bring along.
Seniors: check the dates.A course should finish before graduation so first-year scholarships are not affected. Seniors: finish before graduation.

Enrolling

Create the ASU account and pay the $25.No application and no GPA minimum. Unenrolling within 10 days refunds the $25.
Have a photo ID ready for proctoring.Proctored exams ask the student to show ID on camera. A school ID, passport or driver's license works; check the course page for what it accepts.
Set up a computer with a webcam.A laptop or desktop, not a phone or tablet, with a working camera and microphone for exams.
Install Chrome or Firefox.The course site and the proctoring tool work best in one of these two browsers.
Add the family deadline calendar.SAT, ACT, AP, UA Early Action, FAFSA and ASU start dates in one calendar that stays current. Google Calendar · Apple or Outlook

During the course

Set two fixed study blocks each week.Same days, same times. A course that lives at a fixed hour gets finished; one that waits for free time does not.
Read the Friday report each week.For families with support, it arrives every Friday. Five minutes of reading is enough to spot a slow week before it becomes a lost one.
Put exam weeks on the family calendar.Proctored exams need a quiet room and a working webcam. Plan around trips and tournaments.
Ask early when the student falls behind.A week behind is easy to fix. Three weeks is hard. Reach out to your Caveat advisor or the ASU course team as soon as it shows.
Hold a mid-course check-in.Halfway through, sit down together for ten minutes: what is working, what is not, and whether the pace needs to change.

After the course

Decide whether to add the credit.The $400 decision comes after the grade is in, so there is no rush. Should we add the credit?
Order the transcript if a college needs it.ASU transcripts are $15 each. Order one only when a college or the high school asks for it.
Tell the counselor the result.The school decides how the course appears on the high school record, so they need to know it is finished.
Pick the next course.One finished course makes the second one easier to plan. Plan from 8th grade.
